Samsung Bada and Android Posted on: November 10, 2009
Samsung came today with a good news for Android enthusiasts and a bad news. First the good news: 30% of Samsung smartphones in 2010 will be powered by Android OS. And even more in 2011 as you can see in the above picture (via electronista).
Windows Mobile, Samsung's favorite OS so far takes a huge hit, dropping from 80% at the moment to a mere 20% in 2012. I'm sure this will change if WinMo 7 proves to be a hit or not. Symbian takes a similar plunge, Samsung intends to drop the OS in 2011, but it's not like today there are too may Symbian Samsung smartphones (around 10% in 2009).
Now for the bad news for Android: Samsung just announced it will release it's own OS, named Samsung Bada (which means ocean in Korean). It will be foramlly introduced this December in London, at a Samsung event where they will reveal the SDK too.
I really don't get this move from Samsung, I mean I understand ditching the two OS-es above: they lost popularity and also costed Samsung money to use them, but Android is growing fast and it's free, what more they hope to achieve with Bada?
I believe in the future the succes of an OS will not be in the OS itself but in the third party apps. The more apps you have available and the better quality they have the more users will want to use that OS. And the more users you have the more developers will start creating even better apps fro that OS.
This is what made the iPhone so popular and it's what makes the Android raise so fast. I mean look at Palm, with their great, and I mean GREAT OS, and a great phone, the Pre: they don't have enough apps and the phone does not sell as they expected. And since the phone does not sell no developer will invest time and money to create an app for it.
Anyway, only time will tell if this is the right move from Samsung, and I bet they have some smart people there, alot smarter than this AndroPhones editor and they really did their math before they decided to do this.
